The tragedy of 1981

The typhoon "Elsa" was the most powerful catalyst for torrential rains on Kamchatka in 1981. Such kind of showers were in these places only once. They did not avoid the volcano Vilyuchinsky.

The rain stream, which rushes along the slopes of the volcano, began to erode them. Screes liquefied and this contributed to the formation of a dense stream of water, sand and stones. At the moment when the village fell along the channel of a small river, on its way a car with three climbers returning from the volcano met. Saving was only a chauffeur who later told that he heard a buzz coming from the top. Miraculously he managed to get out of the car and stay away from the mud flow, the car with the passengers was carried away by the mudflow.

You can also climb the Avachinsky volcano for a beautiful panorama of Nalychevo Valley, Mutnovsky, Gorevoy, Vilyuchinsky volcanoes, Petropavlovsk and Elizovo. Arrival to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Sightseeing tour of the city with a visit to the local history museum and some historical monuments.

Tourist

Visit the Vilyuchinsky volcano in winter and summer in one of the following programs

We dress warmly. Although no one is going to climb to the top of the volcano - let's leave this matter to the fearless and enduring tourists - but a walk along the snowy slopes requires a jacket or a downy waistcoat. In the direction of Vilyuchinsky there are always a lot of cars, so the option of hitchhiking works in most cases. As a spare - in case of total bad luck - we are warmed by the thought that you can easily get in the body of the tourist watch. Only just get ready - shaking on the road will be severe. Asphalt is laid only to the village of Thermal, then - the dirt track. On the way we meet camp sites. Here all bathe in the thermal springs. And we also could not resist. Natural pool, water with steam, it smells specifically, but you quickly get used to it. And most importantly - around the beauty! After warm baths you quietly admit to yourself that you still love this world. At the foot of the volcano, we quickly find a high, picturesque waterfall. The pictures are wonderful. It seems that the water begins to move from the stony top, overgrown with azure greens, and ends - in the snow covered palisade. On the slopes of the volcano, many break camps, snack, go further. It smells of flowers and grass. The air is intoxicating. Next to us is a married couple who have already twice visited the peak of Viluchinsky. But even the fascinating stories about the view of the ocean from the height of the volcano could not make us spend five hours on a difficult climb. I wanted to continue to sit on the grassy "cushion" of the slope and be content with the beauty of the volcanic plateau.

The track to the valley of the Shumnaya River is 10 km. Visiting the waterfall and the cold mineral spring. Trekking to Nalychevo thermal springs - 14 km, accommodation in wooden houses, bathing in hot springs. It's a day of rest in the Valley. We will visit the local museum, where you will be invited to listen to the flora and fauna of the park.

We pass through Panachevsky pass, after which the path joins the path from the Nameless Pass to the Semyon Shelter. We will go to the village of Pinakovo, where the truck will take us and transfer to Petropavlovsk. Drive to the airport for your departure home. The cost of the tour is 739 euros per person. One-off additive - 118 euros.

Vilyuchinsky Volcano (Vilyuchinsky Sopka, Vilyuchinsky Volcano) is considered extinct, but volcanologists have noted steam-gas emissions in the area of its peak.

The height of the volcano is 2175 meters above sea level. The cone of Vilyuchik is unusually even, beautiful and by the effect produced, it can compete with the famous Japanese Fujiyama or Italian Vesuvius. On the northern tributary slope of the cone is a small depression of its destroyed crater. In the south-eastern part of Vilyuchik there are hot springs.

Day 1 - Flight Arrival and meeting at the Yelizovo airport in Kamchatka. Slopes of Viluchinsky are cut by deep barrancos (furrows like ravines). Their presence suggests that the last eruptions occurred, most likely, a very long time ago. According to some studies, the last eruption of the Viluchinsky volcano occurred more than 7 thousand years ago.

The steepness of the slopes of the volcano is 15-35 degrees.

Day 4 - Transfer to the "dead forest" of Tolbachik, where we will see the destruction caused by the great eruption. This territory was used by the Russian space agency to test space vehicles. It is the largest crater in Kamchatka and one of the largest in the world. Day 6 - We will drive by truck to the western side of the Nameless Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes  Kamchatka. From here you can see two giants: the volcanoes of Kluchevskaya and Kamenskaya. All this territory is home to the brown bear of Kamchatka.

To the north of Vilyuchik there are about 25 small slag cones and lava domes. Among them lie two lakes - Zelenoye and Topolovoe. They appeared as a result of the activities of these volcanoes. Lakes are declared monuments of nature.

On September 5, 1981, after a heavy rainstorm brought by the typhoon of Elsa, a mud stream (selenium) came down from the western slope. At this time four people came back from the volcano on the car: three climbers and a driver. Miraculously escaped the chauffeur then told that he heard approaching incomprehensible rumble, was thrown out of the car and somehow got out on the beach, and the car with the passengers was hit and carried away by the stream.

The volcano got its name from the Bay of Viluchinskaya. Itelmen called this bay Niyakshin, but nobody understood the meaning of this word. Therefore, in 1830 the hydrographers P. Ilyin and P. Skrypov renamed the bay to the Viluchinskaya.

Vilyuchik is partially located in the territory of the South Kamchatka Nature Park, which was added to the UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage List in the nomination "Volcanoes of Kamchatka" in 1996.

We will win 350 meters in height in the way, which will take about 3-4 hours.

Legends

Kamchadals consider volcanoes the dwellings of the deceased and say that smoke is seen above the peaks, when the deceased are drowning their yurts. They feed, according to the aborigines, with whale oil, and whales catch in the underground sea. The same fat is used to have light, and bones are stoked in place of firewood.

The "ignition" of volcanoes not only the Kamchadals, but also the Cossacks consider an omen of bloodshed. The longer and more "burns", the more blood is spilled, they say.

Day 13 - Ascent to the volcano Avachinskaya. The trek will lead us to one of the best views in Kamchatka with a panoramic view of the magnificent Avacha Bay, the Pacific Ocean and the Koryaski volcano. On top we will see an amazing red crater and fumaroles of Avachinskaya.

The central part of Kamchatka is the place where the great volcanoes of Eurasia are located. The scenery is very impressive with an excellent view of the Klyuchevskaya volcano group, with the highest active Klyuchevskaya Sopka. Walking in the footsteps of the eruption of the Plosky Tolbachik volcano - the northern Tolbachik cork and the Fairy forest. The place of the indigenous peoples of Kamchatka.

The Kamchadals are called "Kamuli" or "small souls" (the Kamchadal soul is "Kamulich"). These gods, according to the aborigines, are enemies of man. They live on the highest most strongly smoking and fire-breathing volcanoes, because of which the Kamchadals not only ascend them, but they do not dare to come close.
