"Shrek"  (Eng. Shrek, 2001) - American full-length animated film directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicki Jenson based on William Steig’s children's book “Shrek!”.

This is the first full-length cartoon in history that won an Oscar for best animated feature film. Also awarded the BAFTA, Annie Awards (in 8 nominations) and other film awards.

In the film, heroes of famous and beloved fairy tales in European culture have been collected and work, the traditional plot lines of which are skillfully and comically interwoven into a completely different story. The comic effect is created not only by an unexpected combination of completely different stories into one, but also by the fact that fairy-tale characters themselves read fairy tales and know what is in them and what is not, however, every second they violate spectator expectations, and also because the characters live in a conditional The Middle Ages, but their speech combines with a high poetic style (for example, traditional fairy tales), as modern spoken language with stylistically reduced vocabulary, colloquial turns and anachronistic references to modern technology, and rhodium discussion of celebrity and film industry life.

Tagline: The prince is not charming. The princess is not sleeping. A bosom friend doesn't help. The ogre is a hero. Fairy tales will never be the same.

Plot

Shrek is a huge green ogre (cannibal giant from Western European tales) who lives alone in a swamp in the vicinity of the city-state Dyulok, inhabited by people, animals, dolls and others from various European tales and legends (eg. Little Red Riding Hood, Pinocchio, three blind mice from an English children's folk poem). He practically does not eat people, out of the kindness of his soul, but his pride is warmed by the fact that at the sight of him everyone rushes in all directions. However, when Lord Farquad is an evil shorty, the ruler of Dulok, expels from his lands all the heroes of various fairy tales to the Shrek swamp, the latter is sent to find out with Farquad the question of freeing the swamp from them. He himself is not threatened with deportation, because he easily overcomes all the peasants who are trying to bind him. Together with him, the talkative Donkey, who is always annoying Shrek, who Shrek once rescued from the soldiers of the ruler, has always linked to Shrek.

Lord Farquad himself wants to become the legitimate king, but for this, according to a fabulous canon, he must marry a princess. Magic Mirror from a fairy tale about Snow White under threat shows him a choice of three (the first two of them - Snow White and Cinderella), and he ultimately gives preference, on the advice of the courtiers, the third - Princess Fiona, who is sharpened in the castle tower, guarded by a dragon. Farquad arranges a tournament, the winner of which will receive the honorary right to defeat the dragon and rescue the princess, since the ruler himself does not want to be in danger, and could not defeat anyone physically.

Shrek and Donkey arrive just in time for the tournament. The lord proclaims that the one of the knights who will kill the giant will receive the honorary right to save the princess. Shrek easily defeats all alone. Farquad unexpectedly changes his plan and announces Shrek as the winner of the tournament. Under the threat of life, Shrek agrees to save the princess, if in exchange Farquad orders the fabulous creatures to leave his swamp.

Shrek and Donkey go to the dragon castle. The dragon with a wave of its tail throws Shrek into the tower of Fiona and remains face to face with the Donkey. It turns out that this is a dragon, and she suddenly falls in love with an Donkey, trying to flirt with him. At this time, Shrek leads Fiona out of the tower, and the three of them with the Donkey manage to escape.

Fiona thinks that the beautiful prince freed her (as it should be in the plot of her fairy tale, familiar to her, as well as everyone from childhood), but everything did not go exactly as it should. She does not want to go to Farquad, and Shrek has to drag her.

Fiona hides from Shrek and Donkey every time before sunset. A donkey accidentally discovers that Fiona at night turns into a green giantess of the same “species” as Shrek. Shrek hears a part of their conversation about “who can love such a monster”, but thinks they are talking about him. He is offended and leaves, and in the morning he surrenders to Fion the Lord Farquad.

The tragedy of Shrek and Fiona is that both seem to be those, and try to be what they are not. People have long labeled them: on Shrek - the fact that he is a huge stupid cannibal, on Fiona - that the princess should be quiet and submissive. Both Shrek and Fiona are so accustomed to these unreal images that they are stuck in them without knowing it. Believing once in themselves others, they better understand each other, but for a moment having lost themselves, they part, as it seems to them, forever. They will again have to live under the labels of the meek princess and the evil ogre. And only their great desire again not to lose themselves and their love, discarding these very labels and misunderstanding leads them to happiness and love.

Fiona is preparing for the wedding and remembers Shrek. Donkey decided to tell Shrek the truth. Upon learning that Fiona loves him, Shrek on the Dragon, who loves the Donkey and agrees to help Shrek, flies to the castle. At this time the sun sets, and Fiona in front of everyone turns into an ogre. Lord Farquad orders the imprisonment of his “monster bride” in the tower. Shrek beats her with the help of the Dragon who swallows Farquad.

Fiona's curse can be lifted with a kiss, so Shrek kisses her, and everyone expects that now she will turn into a beautiful woman. However, Fiona remains immense, and he and Shrek play a merry wedding in the swamp.

Artistic features

The film is based on the constant postmodernist play on the well-known images and plot structures of classical literary tales and their cinematic incarnations. The filmmakers satirically rethought moralizing conformism, into which the genre of artistic fairytales degenerated by the end of the 20th century, and used the film’s usual fairy-tale images in an unusual non-conformist interpretation.

For example: Peter Pan is standing in a queue to, as required by law, surrender the Fairy Ding-Din to Lord Farquad's guards for a reward - the emphasized “law-abiding” nature of this act contradicts not only the spirit of the classic story about Peter Pan (who just refuses to follow the “adult” rules and does not want to grow up), but the usual human morality. Another example: the Gray Wolf appears in a “grandmother's” dress and cap, but talks in this bass — that is, it’s not about trying to conceal its essence, like in the fairy tale about Little Red Riding Hood, but about showing it, and even with a new an old children's tale to "adult" undertones - a hint at one of the phenomena of modern Western sexual culture transvestism. All sorts of hints, designed for different age and cultural groups of spectators, and form the subtext.

The main plot of the film is also a composition of inversions of popular fairy tales: for example, the motif of Shrek and Fiona is the exact inversion of the fairy tale about Beauty and the Beast (in which the Beast turns out to be the Prince).

Shrek (Shrek) - the ogre-eater, the hero of the same story by the American writer William Steig, as well as the cartoon series “Shrek” 1,2,3, “Shrek forever”. In the cartoon, he is voiced by Mike Myers.

Shrek is a huge green eater living in a small swamp in the magical state of Dulok, which is inhabited by people and characters from a variety of fairy tales. Despite his frightening appearance, Shrek is very kind, and his only desire is to live in his beloved swamp away from the rest of the kingdom’s inhabitants.

Perhaps this would have happened if Lord Farquad, the evil and insidious ruler of Dulox, did not drive out all the heroes of fairy tales from their lands, and they did not settle in Shrek's house. Dreaming to get rid of uninvited guests, the ogre goes to Farquad in the company of the annoying talking donkey, whom he saved from the royal guards. The ruler of Dulok himself wants to marry a fabulous, imprisoned in a high tower, guarded by a fire-breathing dragon.

After the knightly tournament, Shrek concludes an agreement with Farquad: he will rescue the princess from imprisonment, and in return the lord will deliver him from the fabulous inhabitants who settled in the swamp.

Having reached the tower, Shrek leads Fiona out of her, while the fire-breathing dragon, which actually turned out to be a dragon, flirts with the Donkey. On the way to Dulok, Shrek and fall in love with each other, but they understand that the ogre and the princess can never be together.

Meanwhile, Donkey discovers that the princess Fiona has a terrible curse - at night she turns into a green cannibal, very similar to Shrek himself. However, the conversation overheard and misunderstood by Shrek completely spoils the relationship between the three friends.

Returning to the kingdom, Shrek gives the princess to Lord Farquad and returns to the swamp, but can not forget about his love. The donkey tells him the truth about Fiona, and with the help of the dragon’s love for the donkey, they save her from the evil Farquaad. To remove the curse, Shrek kisses, she turns into a green giantess forever, and lovers go to live in Shrek's house in the swamp.

Subsequently, the love of the ogre and Fiona is going through several more trials: first, the fairy godmother Fiona wants to marry her son (“Shrek-2”), then Prince Fine sets up a military coup (“Shrek-3”), and after that the ogre, having doubted the correctness of his life choice, finds himself in an alternate reality (“Shrek Forever”). However, each time Shrek is convinced that the most important thing in his life is his family: his beloved wife Fiona and three children, charming little cannibals.

In these fascinating adventures, the hero not only found new true friends: Cota in Boots, the Three Little Pigs, the Cookie, but also earned the respect of ordinary peasants who used to hunt him.

Start

We know little about childhood and youth of Shrek. But we know that his father constantly wanted to eat him (one of these cases, Shrek mentioned in the third cartoon). In Shrek: Musical, we know that he left the house at the age of 7, having moved to a new house in a swamp. In the cartoon "Shrek Forever," the screenwriters wanted to show it as a teenager.

Shrek

In the first cartoon, Shrek lives in a lonely house in a swamp, leads a measured life of a loner, which he seems to be very pleased with. He appreciates comfort and tranquility, although some elements of his home can only be called an ogre, which are ear wax candles or eye-shakes.

Being a good-natured by nature, he, in order not to be disturbed by local people, puts dreadful signs in front of the dwelling, but sometimes he still has to repel the attacks of the villagers, who treat him like an ordinary man-eating giant.

But still his peace is violated by fairy-tale heroes, expelled by Lord Farquad from the kingdom of Dulock. Shrek decided to help them.

Together with Shrek, a talking Donkey attached to the ogre goes to Lord Farquad. Upon the arrival of Shrek in Dyulok the tournament began. Shrek unexpectedly turns out to be the winner. As a winner, Farquad gives him a task - to save Princess Fiona from the Dragon's tower, and as a reward he promises to return Shrek to his swamp and not disturb him.

Shrek sets off and finally gets to the princess. Hurriedly talking to her, he grabs the princess on the shoulder and drags away from the castle. Later they all manage to escape from the Dragon.

Fiona complains that the ogre saved her. Shrek forces her to go to Farquad. On the second night, he hears what Fiona says about the monster, takes it personally and leaves. The donkey, convincing Shrek that Fiona is not talking about him, goes along with him to Dyulok riding on the Dragon who, it turns out, has fallen in love with the Donkey. Upon arrival, Shrek barely stops the wedding. Fiona learns that the ogre loves her, and reveals his main secret to Shrek and Farquad: she turns into a female ogre every night. The knights of Farquad try to separate them from each other, but then the Donkey, saddled by the Dragon, arrives. In the ensuing brawl, the Dragon eats Farquad. Shrek kisses Fiona, and she remains in the form of a bridging forever - just to match Shrek.

At the end of the cartoon shows the wedding of Fiona and Shrek.

Shrek 2

In the second cartoon, Shrek and Fiona live happily and do not reproach each other for anything - until they receive an invitation from Fiona’s parents, the king and queen of the Farfair. Shrek has no desire to meet them, but still Fiona makes him. A Donkey living in Shrek is riding with them.

King Harold and Queen Lillian do not accept Shrek very well. Fiona is angry because Shrek and Harold were not good at dinner. Shrek regrets this. Soon Harold encourages Shrek to go into the woods to hunt. Wandering there with the Donkey, Shrek meets Kota in his boots there, trying to kill Shrek. He learns from Kota that King Harold ordered to kill the ogre. The King, the Fairy of the Cross Mother, nasled the King - from the very beginning she prepared Fiona as a bride for her own son, a cute and boastful prince Chamingu. An ogre in the company of Kota and Oslo goes to the Fairy to find out the cause of his misfortune with Fiona. The fairy says that there are no such tales where ogres and princesses would live together happily ever after. Shrek sneaks into the room with elixirs, where he finds a bottle "happily ever after." This potion turns the Donkey into a beautiful white stallion, Shrek into a handsome man, and Fiona returns her former human form to the princess.

In the morning Shrek is found by three charming peasant girls, and he notices the transformation. Later, he jumps on his horse and hurries to the palace. But Fiona is intercepted by Prince Chaming, who pretends to be Shrek who has reincarnated, and the Shrek fairy godmother the Mother of God convinces us that they are not a pair with Fiona. After that, he goes to the “Poison Apple” bar, where he is given the opportunity to overhear the conversation of Fairy and Chaming with King Harold and understand the essence of deception. Running away, they with the Horse and the Cat fall into the hands of the royal knights.

Fairy friends arrange Shrek escape. Later, he organizes a pogrom in the city with the help of the Big Gingerbread Man and makes his way to the castle. Shrek has time before Prince Chaming kisses Fiona. Trying to kill the ogre, the Fairy shoots him with a magic wand, but King Harold shields him with his own body. The shot ricochet to the Fairy, it disappears, and the king turns into a frog. After that, he gives his blessing to Shrek and Fiona. Fiona refuses to stay with the Shrek people, because for Shrek it is too big a sacrifice, and he and the Donkey return to their former guises.

At the end shows the party Shrek and Fiona.

Shrek the Third

In the third part, the main problem for Shrek is fatherhood, for which he is not morally ready. He has nightmares about the hosts, he is resigned to this prospect, because he loves his wife very much. When Fiona is allowed to triple, Shrek understands that children are not so bad, although it is quite problematic. In addition, he faces the throne of the far-off kingdom, but without much effort he puts the problem on the shoulders of the young

"Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess. Alas, she became a victim of evil spells, which only the first kiss of love could destroy. She became a prisoner of the castle under the protection of a terrible fire-breathing dragon. Many brave knights sought to free her from the prison, but all were waiting for her death. And now guarding the dragon, she wasted the days in the highest tower of the castle, waiting for the kiss of her contender ... "- hehe hehe, and believed it! Oh, and crazy! ”- With these words ten years ago, this good-natured green giant burst into our lives from the movie screens. And since then, he has been walking through our lives, raising our spirits to us and our children. So where does he come from?

The literary father of our hero is an American children's writer and artist William Steig (1907-2003). Shrek first appeared to readers in 1990. Initially it was a small - 32 page long story, illustrated by the author himself. The story is about the adventures of a green ogre, large and terrible in appearance, but with a good soul — a giant cannot harm people even when they deserve it. His name is taken from German, where the word Schreck means fear and horror. Based on this story, such popular cartoons "Shrek", "Shrek 2", "Shrek the Third", and "Shrek Forever" were shot. Of course, the content of the film version differs from the literary original, in which, for example, Fiona turned from a person into an ogre, and in the story it was immense from the beginning.

Now comes the question: who are such ogres and how do they differ from, say, trolls?

These fabulous creatures come to us from Celtic mythology. The ancient people represented them as huge (up to 20 meters tall) giants-cannibals. Ogres lived in the forests (as opposed to the trolls who lived in the mountains) and had incredible strength. As a weapon, these creatures used clubs and were completely devoid of intelligence. According to other sources, it was a more “petty” giant, from 2.5 to 4 m, lived in the forests of Europe and was extremely disliked by the surrounding population for stealing children. And it is not strange, as a spouse with him could live an ordinary human woman with magical powers (in later variations read - a witch). The extermination of the ogres was one of the tasks of the errant knights. Such an unsightly portrait is obtained.

Unlike its mythological fellows, our character is clearly ambiguous, with a pronounced character. On the one hand, he is unsociable and rude, with terrible manners, but on the other he is a true, loyal friend who always comes to the rescue and does not remember past grievances. From series to series, Shrek gains more and more positive features, each time he learns something new: to love, to accept others as they are, with their strengths and weaknesses, to appreciate that he has a family. What is his phrase worth at the end of the third series after the birth of children: do not get up, I myself (you will agree, it’s not often we hear this from our male fathers). And even if he allows himself to be torn down, rude and leave, he always comes back exactly at the moment when he is most needed.

In my opinion, this is a very interesting character, showing that it is not always necessary to judge someone by appearance and manners, deeds and spiritual qualities that show the true state of affairs are important.

Mistakes in the cartoon

  • To become king, Lord Farquard had to marry the princess, so the magic mirror offered him a choice of three candidates: Cinderella, Snow White and Fiona. However, as we all know from childhood, Cinderella has never been a princess.
  • The door in the house of Shrek in different episodes opens inwards and outwards.
  • The arrow in the ogre's buttock after the battle with the robbers appeared absolutely unexpectedly - it was not in previous shots.
  • To enter the mill premises, Fiona just needed to open the door and step over the threshold. But in the morning for some reason the door is on a dais, and several steps lead to it.

Plot

Caution, the text may contain spoilers!

The winner of the competition will have to bring him a bride - Fiona, imprisoned in a tower guarded by a fire-breathing dragon. Shrek turns out to be this daredevil.

Upon returning to Dulok, Fiona prepares to go beyond Farquad, and constantly remembers her savior. Meanwhile, Shrek learns the whole truth about the princess, and hurries to the lord's castle. With the help of a dragon's donkey lover, he rescues a girl from the villain's clutches.
