An importunate and chatty Donkey is the brightest example of a comic partner; in all four animated cartoons about Shrek, his overall cheerfulness and optimism, Donkey organically shaded a grim and stern ogre.

Together with Shrek and the Cat in Boots, Donkey went in search of Arthur Pendragon (Arthur Pendragon), cousin of Fiona and the closest challenger to the emptied throne of the Third Far Kingdom. During the wanderings, due to the error of the scattered sorcerer Merlin (Merlin), the Donkey and the Cat accidentally exchanged bodies; they could not master the new forms at once, but eventually the heroes managed to do it. The donkey and his inordinately lively children played a significant role in the disruption of Shrek's children's holiday at the beginning of the fourth cartoon; to some extent it was the Donkey who provoked a fury from Shrek - eventually leading to a reckless conclusion of the contract with the evil sorcerer Rumpelstiltskhen (Rumplestiltskin). In the alternative reality created by the magic of the contract, Donkey worked for some time on local witches - who used him as a draft animal and an improvised car radio.

Escaping from Rumpelstiltshen, Shrek took with him and the Donkey. Over time, the Donkey realized that you can trust Shrek; friendship between them began. Soon it turned out that the "alternative" Ass is surprisingly clever and smart - so, he managed to find a loophole in the contract Rumpelshtiltshena. Later, the Donkey together with the Cat in Boots saved Fiona from the Pied Piper and took part in an attack on Rumpelstiltshen Castle.
