The meaning of the word “desire.” The meaning of the word “to desire But the quality leaves much to be desired

Boris Samoilovich Schwarzkopf

V.K. Kotov from Ulan-Ude asks: “Which is correct: Makes you want the best or Leaves you to want the best?”.

In the modern Russian literary language there is a phraseological expression with the meaning “not good enough, unsatisfactory, does not meet certain requirements” - leaves much to be desired(options – much better or a lot). Explanatory dictionaries do not indicate that this expression can be used with negation Not [Added to the journal text by the author's hand: FSRY 298] - and then it means “excellent, meets all requirements,” for example: “But the people who made up the backbone of the division were excellent, and their political and moral state did not leave much to be desired” (Katukov. He who raised the sword will die by the sword). [ Added to the journal text by the author's hand: NB derivational non-normative option]

"Leaves you wanting better"- an error typical of colloquial speech with its carelessness towards linguistic means. This error sometimes gets into fiction and in print like this: “...his physical condition left much to be desired”(Kozhevnikov. Sheet and Sword); “Viktor Petrovich’s characterization did not leave much to be desired: a calm, balanced person, a non-drinker...”(Rosen. Last two weeks); “But the organization of work in our scientific institutes, selection of personnel, balance of power, economic and moral incentives often leave much to be desired.”(Asanov. Goddess of victory).

Arbitrary replacement of the prefix ( behind- instead of O-) – deviation from the literary norm. When using phraseological units, it is necessary to accurately reproduce the lexical composition and grammatical organization of the expression.
